Distribution System Design Technician 1

Union Power Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Distribution System Design Technician 1 who will meet consumers, developers and other utilities for the purpose of designing and staking new lines, relocation of existing lines and to stake system improvements while continuously remaining focused on the Cooperative's Mission and Vision Statements, and the promotion of the Cooperative's Guiding Values.

 

Essential Duties of the Position:

  1. Designs overhead and underground electric distribution facilities. Stakes primary and secondary line extensions, lighting projects, system improvements, sectionalizing equipment, line relocations, and retirement of existing facilities with minimum assistance. Coordinates construction with contractors and other utilities. Completes all required documentation.
  2. Negotiates, prepares easements, and secures rights-of-way for line construction projects.
  3. Prepares construction cost estimates as required for contribution in aid.
  4. Perform all duties assigned by supervision.

 

Work Qualifications:

  1. Two-year Vocational / Technical degree in engineering or related field preferred.
  2. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  3. Knowledge of electric distribution system engineering, construction and operations is required.
  4. Must be knowledgeable of distribution specifications and designs, construction methods, material units.
  5. Must be knowledgeable of National Electrical Safety Code, RUS Construction Specifications, basic electrical theory, system service rules and regulations, pertinent operational policies and practices.
  6. Must have demonstrated the ability and skill to plan and organize work with a minimum of supervision.
  7. Must be able to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
  8. Must hold and maintain a valid driver's license to operate a light company vehicle.
  9. Proficient in the use of automated staking tools and job management applications such as Futura and Project Tracker, preferred.
  10. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  11. Ability to read and interpret both digital and paper maps.

 

Working Conditions:

Fieldwork in various weather conditions and terrain; some work in general office environment; requires flexibility to work irregular hours when required; must be able to walk long distances (up to a half mile) periodically.
