Power in Our Voices. Purpose in Our Actions.

MONROE, NC — The Union County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated will host The People’s Brunch on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Threshold Church, 3501 Antioch Church Road, Weddington, NC.

This inaugural community brunch will feature a dynamic lineup of speakers who embody leadership, advocacy, and purpose:
  • Rev. Nelson Rivers, III, Vice President of Religious Affairs and External Relations, National Action Network
  • Senator Kandie D. Smith, North Carolina State Senate
  • Bakari Sellers, Attorney and CNN Political Commentator
The event aims to mobilize constituents and elevate awareness around the urgent social issues facing our communities—from local to global—in pursuit of sustainable systemic change. Guests will hear powerful insights on civic engagement, economic empowerment, and collective responsibility.

“The People’s Brunch reminds us that progress happens when people come together with purpose,” said Deirdre Hatcher, President of the Union County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “We are proud to honor those who lead with vision and courage in making our communities stronger.”

During the program, the chapter will honor five outstanding individuals who exemplify Delta Sigma Theta’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust through their service and leadership:
  • Economic Development: Phillip Faust, Director of Business Development, Union County Chamber of Commerce
  • Educational Development: Trinisha Dean, Executive Director, Alliance for Children

  • Physical and Mental Health: Dr. Garnet Maharajh, Senior Partner, Novant Health Child & Adolescent Medical Group, Monroe
  • Political Awareness and Involvement: Ernestine Staton, Mayor Pro Tem, Marshville, NC
A portion of the proceeds from The People’s Brunch will support the chapter’s scholarship fund and community-based initiatives that advance education, health, and social justice across Union County.
