Charlotte, NC — Assist ME, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that provides free medical mobility equipment to those in need, is proud to host the annual Wheels & Walker-thon on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Park Road Park. This inclusive, family-friendly 5K walkathon brings the community together to raise program awareness and vital funds to support mobility access for individuals across the greater Charlotte region.
“Mobility is more than movement—it’s independence, opportunity, and connection,” said Jack Sheehan, Founder and Executive Director at Assist ME. “By coming together for the Wheels & Walker-thon, we not only raise funds and awareness, but amplify our commitment to bridging gaps and bringing more mobility equipment to those in need.”

About Wheels & Walker-thon
Take part in an “up to 5K” walkathon at your comfort level at the fully accessible Park Road Park.
- Registration perks: Sign up by Sunday, August 3rd to receive our first official event T-shirt mailed to you in time for the event. Other ticket and donation options are available online.
- Festivities: Food trucks with breakfast and snack items, photo booth, free water stations, an equipment donation drive (visit Donate Equipment for a list of accepted items) and recognitions for:
- Largest team
- Top fundraisers (individual & team)
- Most festive participants
- Most creatively decorated mobility devices
- Select the best name for each our three new cartoon mascots and
receive an entry for a drawing for a $50 gift card.
- Accessibility & Safety:
- No recreational bikes, scooters or skateboards allowed as a safety measure for those attending with medical mobility and assistive devices
- Event will proceed rain or shine unless canceled for public safety. No refunds.

Assist ME is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Charlotte, NC, that collects distributes new and gently used mobility devices—including wheelchairs and tub transfer benches—
at no cost to children to adults in need across the greater Charlotte region. Since its founding in 2014, Assist ME has restored independence to thousands thanks to community support, dedicated volunteers, and equipment and financial donors.

Your gift provides high demand and often depleted stock of various sized wheelchairs, tub benches, and other mobility devices free of charge for children to adults with low income or little to no insurance or experience delays due to Medicaid gaps.

Volunteer
- Day-of roles include event setup for signage, tables, pop-up tents, water distribution stations, etc. (6:45 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.) and takedown (approx. 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.)
- Live Streaming & Media Crew Needed: Interview participants, promote online donations, and share stories in real-time. Great for individuals, clubs or local media.
