About Us

Our Story
UDI is Union County’s oldest nonprofit for adults with Developmental Disabilities. UDI is the result of a Monroe Jaycee project in 1970. Incorporated as Union County Vocational Workshop, this was the first program of its type in Union County. UDI started with a small staff and just 10 clients in a renovated school building on Fairley Avenue. In 1977, a new 15,000 square foot building was built on the UDI current Walkup Avenue location. Over the next two years, new programs were developed and the number of clients increased rapidly, making the new building too small.

In 1980, additions created an additional 11,000 square feet, all of which was needed to serve the 100 clients who attended the facility daily. In 1985, the workshop changed its name to Union Diversified Industries, Inc. to better enhance the business and professional image in the community. Since then, the facility has grown by another 16,680 square feet and has increased skills training areas, production capabilities, and rehabilitation services. Currently we have 90 individuals in our programs.
