Govern with Confidence: Nonprofit Board Member Best Practices

Govern with Confidence: Nonprofit Board Member Best Practices

Have you been interested in taking your volunteerism to the next level? Have you considered joining a board but don’t know where to start? Join us for our Emerging Leaders Workshop: How to Be a Good Board Member with guest speaker Andrew Friend. As the Executive Director of the Council on Aging in Union County and a dedicated supporter of numerous nonprofits, Andrew brings a well-rounded perspective having served as both an Executive Director and a Board Member. He’ll share the dos and don’ts of not only joining a board, but how to be an effective and impactful board member.

Andrew Friend is the Executive Director of Council on Aging in Union County, where he has served for the past six years and brings over a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector. During his tenure, he has led the organization through a period of intentional and transformative growth, expanding its annual operating budget from $600,000 to $1.8 million. A key driver of the organization's success has been his work with the agency’s volunteer Board of Directors to build a strong, engaged governance team focused on strategic planning, fundraising, and oversight. Andrew brings firsthand experience in cultivating effective board-staff partnerships and aligning board leadership with organizational goals. His practical, real-world insights offer emerging leaders a clear roadmap to becoming impactful, mission-driven board members.

The Emerging Leaders Program equips future influential decision-makers in Union County with comprehensive professional and personal skills, engaged civic knowledge, and active community service.
