CHARLOTTE, N.C.--- With over 56 years of service to the Charlotte Region, SCORE Charlotte was presented the North Carolina District Chapter of the Year 2020 Award for The Small Business Market by SCORE National based in Herndon, VA, a suburb of Washingon, D. C.
The award was given in recognition of the Chapter’s leadership, dedication and commitment to serving small businesses in the Charlotte Region. The Chapter’s innovation and
key contributions to National SCORE programs such as the current on-boarding program for new SCORE volunteers and the Early Adopters Program for the Engage system to manage new client relationships led to the award. The Chapter also led participation in a district-wide Zoom Implementation Program, enabling client mentoring via video as well as modified workshop presentations during the Covid crisis.
Subsequently, despite Covid 19, the Chapter was able to handle 2,088 potential client requests, an increase of 40% over 2019.
Further, the Chapter’s Public Outreach Program played a signifcant role in the selection of Charlotte as NC District Chapter of the Year 2020, according to Juliette Weiland, Immediate Past President for 2019-2020.
“We work hard to be an active strategic partner with over 40 SCORE Ambassadors highly engaged in a diversity of community events,” Weiland reported. “As a result, we are continually increasing awareness of our services and opportunities to volunteer.”
The Chapter’s goal was to grow the inclusion and diversity to meet the needs of the community. For 2020, the number of Certified SCORE Mentors increased by 30% for minority and 15% for women. Several of these individuals are now in Chapter leadership positions.
In addition to the NC District Chapter of the Year Award, SCORE Charlotte was also the recipient of the Diamond Chapter Excellence Award 2020 in recognition of its unwavering dedication and commitment by its over 90 volunteers on behalf of the small business community.
The Diamond Award is given only to those Chapters who have attained a Platinum Award for five or more years in a row in recognition of its outstanding support of the small business community.

Why Chapter of the Year in 2020
The Charlotte SCORE Chapter has been a forerunner in adopting new systems, programs or processes to get the job done, according to Danny Fischer, Chapter President Co-Chair.
“When Covid hit, we immediately developed new teams, strategies and processes given the onslaught of client requests,” he reported. “One example was quickly realizing that we needed one Intake Person to handle just our voice mails. Those ramped up from several a week to over 100 in the first month. Of these, 93% were Covid-related.”
H.R. “Helen” Harwell is in agreement with her Co-Chair’s assessment. She feels this was one of the Chapter’s major accomplishments for 2020.
“I am most proud of how our team stepped up and really pulled together to handle all our client requests and workshop transitions to Zoom so we could increase our outreach during this critical time.”
Further, Weiland, Fischer and Harwell all believe strongly that the chapter presidents before them along with all the mentors throughout the years helped build the foundation that led to making 2020 a successful year and an award-winning chapter.
