Part two of the Young Professionals of Union County Leadership Skills series will feature Martha Wegner, District Manager for Duke Energy. Martha has spent her entire career with Duke, and its predecessor companies, and credits genuineness and authenticity as one of the top traits that have helped her advance in the company.
Her career path has included experience in community relations, new product development, philanthropic investments and more. She will share how she grew through these roles, and what leadership skills she finds essential for success. You will also have the opportunity to ask your questions about developing these skills for yourself.
Martha Wegner is a career energy employee with Duke Energy and its predecessor companies. Martha’s current role is the District Manager for Duke’s Charlotte Metro headquarters communities, serving Mecklenburg, Gaston, and Union Counties.
The District Manager serves in the State President’s organization in Government and Community Affairs. Martha’s primary responsibilities are issue management for government officials and leadership, as well as community leadership organizations. She works across Duke Energy’s departments, including generation of all types, transmission, distribution, vegetation, etc. As District Manager, she also manages community relations and philanthropic investments.
Prior to her current role, Martha was the Director of Corporate Public Affairs following the merger with Duke Energy and Progress Energy. In this new role, Martha was responsible for Energy Policy work with national government agencies including US Conference of Mayors, National Foundation of Women Legislators, National Association of Counties, and National League of Cities.
She has held numerous roles from energy auditor, new product development, community relations, economic development as well as the District Manager in Asheville prior to moving to Charlotte in 2014.
Martha has her BS in Management and Marketing from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, attended Duke University in a specialized utility management curriculum, and received her Certification in Corporate Community Relations from Boston College. Martha is a native North Carolinian and manages her working family farm, which was recognized as a Century Farm Family in 1976. She is married to Don Wegner and has two adult stepchildren.
