The Wild Turkey 5K Trail Run/Walk serves as the kick off for the Union County Heritage Festival each year. The start for race begins at the Teaching Garden Greenhouse area at 8 am and goes through wooded trails, loops around the soccer fields at Jessie Helms park and circles back to the Teaching Garden Greenhouse for the finish. There is also a free kids fun run at 9:15 am for small children near the start/finish line. The Wild Turkey 5K Trail Run/Walk got its name from the flock of wild turkeys that are regularly seen on the property. Any funds raised from this race will benefit the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue who rescue waterfowl in addition to other types of birds.
