The human voice, the original instrument, remains one the most expressive and emotional sounds in our lives. A voice can evoke deep memories, profound empathy, and ancient held remnants of our histories and ancestries. Composers of the orchestral medium, with their myriad of instruments and timbres, have for centuries tried to draw out with worlds of symphonies the intense sentiment that can be found in a single spoken word or sung note. The Union Symphony presents some of the soul-stirring repertoire that is inspired by the voice. Prepare to be immersed in the ringing depths of Vaughan Williams’ Variations on a theme by iconic English choral composer Thomas Tallis, and risen by Mendelssohn’s “Choral” Symphony No. 5.
