Marcus Smith was named president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 28, 2008, assuming a role for which he had been training most of his life. The son of speedway founder, O. Bruton Smith, Marcus started working at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the summer while in junior high school. He and his two brothers would pick up trash, trim weeds, paint walls and perform numerous other outside maintenance duties while working his way up as an intern in several speedway departments including tickets, events, public relations, administration and corporate sales.
In 1996, Smith joined the speedway’s corporate sales department as a marketing assistant and was eventually promoted to account executive. Smith spearheaded the effort to form SMI’s national sales and marketing department and was selected to head the new effort and became manager and eventually vice president of new business development for Speedway Motorsports, Inc. He became a director of SMI in 2004 and was promoted to executive vice president of national sales and marketing, working on behalf of all 11 motorsports-related operating units of the company, including eight speedways, Performance Racing Network, SMI Properties and U.S. Legend Cars International.
Smith currently serves as president of Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) Charlotte Chapter. He is also a board member of Motor Racing Outreach and Youth Commission International.
